Read this before filling your pool with well water!
Pools need lots of water – either to fill them or to top them off to start the summer season. They usually need between 3,000 and 6,000 gallons. That’s about 10-20 DAYS worth of normal household water usage!
When you use that much water in such a short amount of time you could:
- Run your well dry
- Burn out your well pump
- Damage your water treatment equipment leading to costly repairs.
Here are your options:
- Use untreated well water– ONLY if your raw water isn’t going to stain your pool (meaning it doesn’t have iron or manganese in it), consider putting your water treatment system in bypass BEFORE you fill your pool. This will help protect your equipment.
- Fill your pool SLOWLY over hours or even days – A good rule of thumb is to run your water at half speed and run it for only 30 minutes at a time. Then take a 30 minute break before running it slowly for 30 minutes again. This gives your well time to recover and to keep up with your demand.
- Fill it with another source – Charlie’s Water Wagon in Portland will deliver up to 6,000 gallons of clean water for about $250-$300. Give them a call at 860-347-7656.
So enjoy your summer AND protect your well and water treatment equipment! And remember to change your sediment filter. It will be working overtime!
